Pallas modernist lounge suite, designed by Svante Skogh, Finland, 1950s

This spectacular Pallas lounge suite was designed by Swedish designer Svante Skogh in 1954 and is a rare example of modernist design. It was featured in the international magazine The Studio Year Book of Decorative Art in the 1954/55 season. The Pallas suite consists of a two-seater sofa and an armchair. This set beautifully combines function and aesthetics while retaining an elegant, modern appearance. The combination of shell-shaped upholstered forms and sculpted wooden frames defines this pair. It demonstrates the quality of Swedish design and Finnish manufacture. The frames are slightly raised towards the front, further emphasised by the armrests. Together with the seat cushions, this angle provides a high level of seating comfort, a feature to which Scandinavian designers paid particular attention. The clean lines of the wood finished in a natural birch tone contrast beautifully with the forms upholstered in grey-brown and plum fabric, giving this pair an open and highly photogenic appearance. The colour combination of plum and earthy brown further enhances its visual appeal. The furniture has been restored in keeping with professional upholstery practice and the aesthetics of the period in which it was produced. The set will be an ideal addition to many interiors.

Svante Skogh was a Swedish designer whose creative heyday was in the 1950s and 1960s. During this period, he collaborated with many furniture manufacturers, creating outstanding designs. Among his best-known designs were the series of armchairs and sofas Bodö from 1957 for Seffle, as well as the elegantly curved Model 775 Lounge Chair from 1954 for OPE, designed at the very beginning of Skogh’s career. The Cortina series for Seffle, comprising a sideboard, dining table and dining chairs, as well as a chaise longue produced by Engen, is also still sought after at many auctions.

The set is preserved in perfect vintage condition following restoration. The upholstery has been renewed. The seat height is 43 cm. Armchair height 77 cm | Width 70 cm | Depth 65 cm.
