Englishman C.W.F. France came to Denmark to help his friend Eric Daverkosen run the LAMA mattress factory in Ørholm. After Daverkosen’s early death, he took over the company. During the war, he was interned; it was then that the idea for lightweight, flat-packed wooden chairs was born, which he realised after the war at the mattress factory.

The company worked with Danish designers, including Finn Juhl, Grete Jalk, Ole Wanscher and the Hvidt & Mølgaard duo. At its peak, the factory in Hillerød employed 350 people, and France was a pioneer of Danish furniture exports in the 1950s. The company's history was documented by James France in the book “France & Søn – British Pioneer of Danish Furniture” (2016).
