Large Hand-Hammered Copper Jug, Egypt, 1940s
Description
Large hand-hammered copper jug, Egypt, 1940s
An impressive, large vessel made of hand-hammered copper, originating from Egypt. Its distinctive spherical form—with a short, wide neck and two substantial forged handles—gives it an exceptionally decorative and genuinely artisanal character.
The vessel was made using traditional techniques from sheets of copper; traces of hand hammering and characteristic seams where the sheets were joined are clearly visible.
The surface is covered with a natural, multicoloured patina in shades of brown, copper and gold, with numerous signs of past use.
Large Egyptian vessels of this type were used for practical kitchen purposes, including pots for slow-cooking fava beans (ful medames), as well as large containers for storing food.
Today, they make striking decorative elements, particularly in ethnic, rustic, colonial, vintage or eclectic interiors.
