Description

The Knoll Antimott sofa, manufactured in Germany in the 1960s, is a highly interesting example of European mid-century modern design with clear Scandinavian influences. Models from the Antimott series were produced under the Wilhelm Knoll / Walter Knoll brand and are now among the rarer examples of German design from this period.

The frame is made of teak with a warm finish and beautiful natural grain. It underwent meticulous, professional restoration involving the removal of old finishes, staining, and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. The cushions were remade and upholstered in beige fabric made from recycled wool. Thanks to this work, the sofa looks exceptional and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

Slim armrests and gently tapering legs give the sofa a visual lightness despite its full-size, three-seater form. Stylistically, the sofa belongs to the mid-century modern tradition, while also showing the influence of Danish design, which had a strong impact on German manufacturers in the 1960s. Its form is restrained and functional, with no decorative additions, but with a strong emphasis on proportion and comfort. The Antimott series was also characterised by loose back and seat cushions, giving the sofa a more relaxed, lounge-like character.

This is a piece of furniture that works equally well in modern interiors and more classic vintage arrangements. The open wooden frame keeps the sofa from looking heavy, while the carefully shaped cushions provide comfortable, natural support. Thanks to its proportions and minimalist form, it is highly versatile, working equally well in a living room, lounge area, or study.

Wilhelm Knoll and Walter Knoll were among the most important German furniture manufacturers of the 20th century. The company developed modern design from the post-war period onwards, combining German precision of workmanship with the influence of Scandinavian modernism. The Antimott series remains one of the less obvious yet highly distinctive examples of this aesthetic.
