Niels Jørgen Haugesen was born in 1936 in Vivild, north of Aarhus. He trained as a cabinetmaker, obtaining his apprenticeship certificate in 1956, and then studied at Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen until 1961. In the late 1960s, he worked for Arne Jacobsen, and in 1971 he opened his own studio. He also taught at the Danish Design School.
Haugesen’s best-known design is the X-Line chair from 1977, manufactured by Hybodan and later by Bent Krogh. Haugesen received the ID Prize for a table in 1986 and for the X-Line chair in 1987. In 1996, he was awarded the Furniture Prize, and from 1998 he received a lifetime grant from Denmark’s state arts foundation, Statens Kunstfond. He is described as one of the Danish representatives of the high-tech movement of the 1980s.
His later designs include the Fleur (1998) and Distance (2002) chairs. Haugesen died in 2013, aged 77. His work is documented by, among others, the Swedish Möbeldesignmuseum and auction-house catalogues. At MIDMOD, Haugesen’s furniture appears as individual pieces from the secondary market.
