Platter, art glass, designed by Frantisek Zemek, Sklárna Mstišov, Czechoslovakia, 1960s
Description
Platter, art glass, designed by Frantisek Zemek, Sklárna Mstišov, Czechoslovakia, 1960s
Decorative bowl made of Czech art glass, an excellent example of organic Mid-Century Modern design. The object was made from heavy, hand-formed, furnace-formed soda-lime glass coloured throughout.
The vessel is distinguished by its asymmetrical, expressive form with a flowing line and irregularly raised edges. The dominant colour is a deep honey-amber shade, which at the edges and base gradually transitions into contrasting bands of green. The thick walls and base of the vessel refract light beautifully, fully revealing the three-dimensional quality and sculptural character of the form.
Frantisek Zemek (1913–1960) was a respected Czech designer, and his multicoloured, bionic series designed for the Mstišov glassworks, such as the famous “Rhapsody” collection, are among the most sought-after objects of Czechoslovak vintage glass.
The item is in very good condition, with natural signs of ageing and usage scratches on the underside of the base.
