A set of two office armchairs designed by Herbert Hirche for the German manufacturer Mauser in the 1970s. The armchairs feature a base characteristic of the brand’s products, made from solid anodised aluminium tubes. The seats are upholstered in brown wool fabric and mounted on the original straps. The armrests are covered in plastic. The maker’s mark is located beneath the seat.

Herbert Hirche was a prominent figure in post-war German design, known for his minimalist and functional approach. He designed furniture for various manufacturers, including Mauser Werke Waldeck, creating works that embodied the principles of modernism. His designs were characterised by elegant forms, innovative use of materials, and an emphasis on ergonomics and comfort, making them highly sought after by collectors.

The history of Mauser dates back to 1896, when Alfons Mauser opened a factory producing metal goods, which he sold under the Zaunkönig name. In 1903, Mauser also developed hermetically sealed, lockable steel drums made from iron sheet for the chemical and petroleum industries, which became known as Mauser Patent Barrels. From 1930, Mauser-Werke produced cantilever chairs made from steel tubing according to its own designs. Mauser offered desks, conference tables, coffee tables, and filing cabinets. At the Waldeck factory, seating components made from steel tubing were produced, including individual chairs and multi-seat club benches. At the beginning of the 1950s, Mauser-Libelle seating furniture designed by Walter Papst appeared on the market and became an icon of post-war design. The Mid-Century Modern furniture produced by Mauser from 1929 onwards is now a sought-after design classic. In 1997, Mauser was still regarded as Germany’s largest furniture manufacturer.

The armchairs have been preserved in their original vintage condition. There are minor marks on the original upholstery. The seat height is 42 cm.
