Description

A tall bookcase designed by Ærthøj Jensen and Tage Mølholm for the Danish manufacturer Herning in the 1960s. Made of fine rosewood. The dark colour of the wood contrasts beautifully with the lighter elements on the doors. The bookcase features four shelves, a cupboard with smaller shelves, and a vertically closing bar cabinet. Inside are four shallow drawers lined with green felt and two smaller shelves. The piece stands on low metal legs. The bookcase is as elegant as it is functional. It perfectly embodies the aesthetics of Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern design and will complement a wide range of interiors. The original maker’s mark is located on the back panel.

Jens Ærthøj Jensen and Tage Mølholm were an iconic Danish design duo who became style icons of Mid-Century Modern in the 1950s and 1960s. They ran their own manufactory, Ærthøj Jensen & Mølholm Herning in Denmark, creating furniture that became synonymous with the highest quality of Scandinavian craftsmanship.

Their work was distinguished by minimalist forms, excellent proportions, and a lightweight construction set on slender legs characteristic of the era. The designers worked exclusively with fine materials, primarily using the highest-quality teak and rosewood. The duo’s hallmark was an extraordinary attention to detail, evident in the precisely shaped, wood-carved door handles and the flawless finishing of the structural details.
The designers became best known for luxurious case furniture, such as functional chests of drawers, sideboards, and versatile tall bookcases and bar cabinets. These pieces were often fitted with sliding doors and felt-lined drawers, combining elegance with everyday practicality. Today, their original designs are highly valued and sought after by collectors on the international vintage market.

The piece has been preserved in its original vintage condition. It shows minor signs of use consistent with its age.
