Pair of dusty pink armchairs, Wilhelm Knoll, Germany, 1970s

A pair of elegant armchairs manufactured by the German furniture maker Wilhelm Knoll in the 1970s. The rounded frames are made of fine cherry wood with a visible, rich grain and a satin sheen. Cherry wood is highly attractive, hard yet resilient, and resistant to mechanical stress. The loose, thick back and seat cushions have been reupholstered in high-quality, soft bouclé fabric in a dusty pink shade. The seat cushions rest on coil springs, making these armchairs exceptionally comfortable. The set has an elegant and understated appearance. The organic shape of the frames, the high quality of the materials used, and the timeless design allow the set to work beautifully in a wide range of interiors, including modern ones.

Wilhelm Knoll, now known as Walter Knoll, is a brand whose history dates back to 1865, when Wilhelm, the founder of the Knoll dynasty, opened the doors of his leather shop in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1907, the company was taken over by his sons, Willy and Walter, who began producing seating furniture with due care and respect for their craft. At the age of 50, Walter Knoll founded his own company, Walter Knoll & Co. GmbH, which moved to Herrenberg in 1937. At the same time, drawing on his knowledge of the Bauhaus movement and his family’s expertise, Walter’s son Hans travelled to the United States, initially intending to sell his father’s products. Ultimately, together with his wife, Florence Knoll, he founded Knoll Associates there, which later became Knoll International. During the Second World War, the German factory was severely damaged by bombing, leading to the suspension of production. The company began anew after the war, when Walter’s second son, Robert Knoll, joined the family business. Thus, Walter Knoll and Knoll International are two independent furniture brands with a shared heritage. In 1993, Rolf Benz acquired the Walter Knoll trademark and entered the international market. In 2015, the company celebrated its 150th anniversary.

The armchairs are in excellent vintage condition. The upholstery has been renewed. The seat height is 45 cm.
