The Bonanza sofa was designed by Esko Pajamies for the Finnish company Asko in the 1960s and is one of the most distinctive designs of this period in Finnish design. Its form is based on a massive oak wood frame, wide armrests, and clearly defined connections between the individual elements. Its strong, almost architectural form and the restrained use of decorative details make the sofa an excellent example of Scandinavian Brutalism, in which structure and material become an integral part of the form.

The characteristic heaviness of the wooden frame is softened by plush, deeply tufted cushions upholstered in dark brown natural leather. The contrast between the raw geometry of the oak frame and the soft upholstery gives the sofa a highly distinctive character. The visible wooden joints, substantial structural elements, and simple form also allow the Bonanza to fit well into contemporary minimalist interiors.

The oak wood frame has undergone careful and professional restoration, involving the removal of the old finish, staining, and lacquering. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with more than 20 years of experience. The leather upholstery has been lightly refreshed, but visible signs of age and use remain, adding to its distinctive character.

Esko Pajamies (1931–1990) was a Finnish designer and interior architect. In 1961, he founded his own design studio, and his best-known works were created in collaboration with Asko. The Bonanza collection was one of his most important designs and was presented at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1968. In 1979, Pajamies received the Finnish State Art Award.

Asko is one of the most important Finnish furniture manufacturers of the 20th century. Founded in 1918, the company played a significant role in the development of post-war Finnish design, collaborating with numerous designers and bringing their designs into large-scale production. The Bonanza series was one of Asko’s more successful designs from the turn of the 1960s and 1970s.
