Brass Sputnik lamp with Swarovski crystals, Ernst Palme, Germany, 1960s
Description
Brass Sputnik lamp with Swarovski crystals, Ernst Palme, Germany, 1960s
A stunning chandelier manufactured by the Ernst Palme manufactory in the German town of Westheim. It dates from the 1960s. The lamp features gilded brass arms finished with large Swarovski crystals and 33 bulbs with E14 screw fittings. The hand-cut crystals beautifully reflect and refract the light, creating more than 1,000 reflections. In the 1950s and 1960s, lighting manufacturer Ernst Palme was one of the pioneers in using Swarovski crystals in design. The lamp is impressive in form and makes a great impact. This type of lamp—due to its shape—is often called a Sputnik. It is an ideal example of the Glamour style, from which the Hollywood Regency movement emerged. Placed in an interior, the lamp becomes its centrepiece and will not go unnoticed. The maker’s mark can be found inside the brass ceiling canopy.
The chandelier is in very good vintage condition and has been carefully cleaned. The gilded brass surfaces show minimal signs of wear, while the natural patina and minor signs of age do not detract from the elegant workmanship of this piece. This example is a one-of-a-kind piece on a global scale.
