Model 301 Armchair designed by Ejvind A. Johansson, Godtfred H. Petersen, Denmark, 1950s
Model 301 armchair Model 301 designed by Ejvind A. Johansson for the Danish manufacturer Godtfred H. Petersen around 1958/59. Model 301 is the quintessence of 1950s Danish style – subtle and exceptionally comfortable. Its harmonious form combines natural lightness with deep functionality, creating a piece of furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. The armchair’s frame, made of solid wood, is striking for its slenderness, delicate curves and precise finish. The slightly splayed oak legs, organic backrest line and smooth transitions between the elements give the whole piece a dynamic yet calm and balanced appearance. The seat and backrest have been newly upholstered in high-quality fabric that draws the eye with its deep marine hue. Thanks to its compact proportions, it fits perfectly into both modern and classic interiors.
Ejvind A. Johansson lived from 1923 to 2002. He was a Danish architect and furniture designer, regarded as one of the continuators of the Danish modernist tradition. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen and collaborated with, among others, Børge Mogensen. In the 1950s and 1960s, he created elegant, functional furniture – particularly armchairs and chairs – characterised by organic lines, subtle joinery details and excellent proportions. His designs, such as the Model 301 armchair, stood out for their visual lightness, precision of execution and ergonomics. Although today somewhat less well known than his more famous contemporaries, Johansson gained recognition among collectors as a creator of classic, timeless forms with soul.
Godtfred H. Petersen was a Danish furniture manufacturer, active mainly in the 1950s and 1960s, known for high-quality craftsmanship and collaborations with prominent designers of the era, including Ejvind A. Johansson. His workshop specialised in producing elegant, carefully crafted armchairs and chairs in the spirit of Scandinavian modernism. Furniture bearing Petersen’s name combined functionality, refined form and excellent proportions, and is now sought after by collectors and lovers of classic design.
The armchair is in very good vintage condition. The upholstery has been renewed. The seat height is 39 cm.
