Carved bird-shaped containers, 1960s

Description

A unique set of three hand-carved wooden bird-shaped containers. Each piece was made from dark, decorative wood with a beautiful reddish-brown hue and distinctive natural grain.

The birds are depicted in different poses, with meticulously rendered details of their plumage, wings, tails and heads. The upper part of each bird is a removable lid, beneath which is a small oval recess measuring approximately 5 × 3 cm.

The containers are both practical and decorative. Their shape and small size suggest that they were intended for storing small items or as decorative tabletop containers. Given the depiction of the birds and the size of the interior, their original purpose may also have been to store or serve small food items; however, without any surviving source information, this use cannot be confirmed.

The pieces are clearly handmade. Visible hand-finished surfaces and rich sculptural details give them a distinctive, collectible character.

Condition: good, consistent with the age and character of the pieces. Minor signs of use and natural signs of ageing are visible. The surface retains a beautiful, deep patina and sheen.
