Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd was born in 1934 and died in 2016. He was a Swedish painter and sculptor. He studied under Fernand Léger in Paris in 1951 and was a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1965 to 1969. In 1974, he was a visiting professor at the Minneapolis School of Art in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1986, he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal for painting. Reuterswärd is known for his sculpture depicting a revolver tied in a knot, titled Non-Violence, displayed outside the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Versions of the work can also be seen, among other places, in Berlin, Stockholm and Gothenburg. In 1989, Reuterswärd suffered a stroke that forced him to switch from his right hand to his left. He described the period after the stroke in part as a form of liberation. He began drawing with his left hand, and the lines and motifs seem to suggest an exploration both backwards and forwards through time, before and after the stroke. His monumental oil pastel drawings from the late 1990s feature mythological figures and acrobatic exercises among their motifs. They are enigmatic and dreamlike, and although their expression differs from his early conceptual exercises, they are also connected by the artist’s continual exploration of new styles and approaches.

The work is in its original vintage condition.
