An icon of Danish Mid-Century Modern design and a very rare model. The Z-sofa was designed by Danish designer Poul Jensen for the prestigious American furniture manufacturer Selig Furniture in the 1950s. This exceptional piece is a classic example of Danish modernism, combining functionality with refined form. The sofa’s construction draws the eye with its geometric, dynamic Z-shaped armrests in the form of the letter Z, which flow seamlessly into the legs. The sofa’s slender frame is made of teak wood in a deep, warm brown tone, highlighting the natural beauty of the material and the quality of the craftsmanship. It is upholstered in its original green fabric, evocative of the 1950s, which contrasts with the warm tone of the wood. Given its museum-quality character, we decided not to replace the upholstery. The geometric yet visually light construction emphasises the harmony of the design. Thanks to its built-in conversion mechanism, it easily transforms into a functional bed. This sofa is an icon of Danish design, with a dynamic silhouette and a distinctive side profile. It is also a further development of the iconic Z Chair. Jensen’s designs for Selig combine the minimalism typical of Danish modernism with the American penchant for comfort and generous forms. The sofa embodies the aesthetics of Danish MCM design through its minimalist, functional, yet distinctive and bold form. It is a piece that not only impresses with its appearance but also offers everyday comfort, making it an excellent choice for both vintage interiors and contemporary spaces.

Poul Jensen was a Danish furniture designer who rose to prominence during the golden age of Danish design. He is best known for his collaboration with Selig and for designing the Z-Chair, also known as the Z Lounge Chair, one of the most iconic examples of Scandinavian modernism. Although he was not as widely recognised as Hans Wegner or Arne Jacobsen, his designs hold a lasting place in the history of Scandinavian design.

Selig was founded by Mendell Selig and Samuel Wexler in Gardner, Massachusetts, USA, in 1931. In the 1950s, the company became one of America’s leading importers and manufacturers of modern furniture. It focused on high-end designs produced in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Its range embodied the simple, elegant forms typical of post-war Danish design. Selig was responsible for introducing many Scandinavian designers to the American public and popularising a forward-looking modern interior style that became widespread in the United States during the post-war period.

The sofa has been preserved in its original vintage condition. It has minor age-related wear and minor abrasions to the fabric. The seat height is 38 cm. When unfolded, the sofa is 93 cm deep.
