Folk toy with a dancing couple, polychrome, Europe, 1900

Description

I am offering a unique, handmade folk toy depicting a pair of dancers. The piece is made of wood and hand-painted. The figures have movable limbs suspended on wire connectors, while the whole is mounted on its original wooden base with a handle.

This is a rare example of European folk art from the early 20th century. Its exact place of origin is unknown, but its style and craftsmanship indicate Central Europe (probably Germany, Czechia or Austria). Similar toys are referred to as “animated folk toys” or “dancing toys”.

This exceptionally decorative and collectible piece is an ideal addition to a collection of folk art, antique toys and European handicrafts.
