High-back armchair with French cane, mahogany, designed by Bernt Petersen, Wørts Møbelsnedkeri, Denmark, 1960s

A very rare armchair designed by Bernt Petersen for the Danish workshop Wørts Møbelsnedkeri in the 1960s. The armchair’s frame is made of light mahogany, with French cane woven into it. It fills the high backrest as well as the sides of the armchair, which form the armrests. Three loose cushions are upholstered in high-quality sand-coloured fabric. The armchair’s perfect proportions ensure a high level of comfort. Its simple lines, natural materials, and light wood and upholstery tones are a perfect representation of Danish mid-century design.

Bernt Petersen was a Danish architect and furniture designer. In 1957, he graduated from carpentry school, and in 1960 he graduated from the School of Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he later worked as a teacher from 1978 to 1985. He also worked for Molibia and Hans J. Wegner, before opening his own studio in 1963. Petersen is known for his simple style, and most of his furniture was made from light-coloured wood. Several of his designs can be found in concert halls and theatres throughout Denmark. The piece most closely associated with the designer is a small, lightweight stool made of rosewood and cane, with beautifully shaped legs, created in 1959.

The armchair remains in its original vintage condition. It has minor signs of age and a natural patina. The seat height is 42 cm.
