Leather swivel armchair, designed by Eugen Schmidt for Soloform, Germany, 1960s
Description
Leather swivel armchair, designed by Eugen Schmidt for Soloform, Germany, 1960s
A rare lounge armchair designed by Eugen Schmidt for the German manufacturer Soloform in the 1960s. This exceptional armchair embodies the essence of post-war modernism – a combination of sculptural form, the highest quality craftsmanship and timeless elegance. The frame is made of bent, lacquered wood and flows seamlessly into the armrests, creating an elegant setting for the quilted seat. The seat and backrest are upholstered in high-quality genuine leather in an olive-green shade, which contrasts beautifully with the warm tone of the wood. The armchair rests on a chromed metal pedestal with a swivel mechanism, making it both practical and dynamic. Ideal for an office, study, living room or relaxation space. Comfortable, elegant and clearly inspired by the mid-century modern aesthetic, it combines functionality with subtle design expression. The armchair is an excellent example of modernist design, where functionality meets the poetry of form. It is a piece that not only embodies the spirit of the 1960s – a decade of formal boldness, innovation and the pursuit of harmony between people and objects – but also remains highly relevant in contemporary interiors. Its modernist purity and masculine elegance work equally well in vintage spaces and modern Scandinavian arrangements.
Eugen Schmidt was a German architect and modernist designer. He was known for elegant furniture made of bentwood, leather and metal, designed among others for Soloform and Kill International. He was deeply involved in creating designs for the company, which he later took over as Eugen Schmidt Soloform. His armchairs combine ergonomics with timeless aesthetics and are now valued as collectible pieces. He also designed furniture for the German Chancellor’s bungalow. His work often balances classic modernism with a subtle futuristic style.
The armchair has been preserved in its original vintage condition. It shows signs of use consistent with its age, natural patina and cracking in the leather. The seat height is 40 cm.
