Description

Leather three-seater sofa, designed by Georg Thams for A/S Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik, Denmark, 1960s

A three-seater leather sofa designed by Georg Thams for the Danish manufacturer A/S Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik in the 1960s. The sofa represents the essence of Danish modernism: a pursuit of simplicity, functionality, and harmony between form and material. Its silhouette is slim and well proportioned. The frame, made of teak in a warm brown tone, was designed with exceptional attention to line and ergonomics. The gently curved back and armrests flow seamlessly into the legs, creating a cohesive, sculptural whole. The soft transitions between the wooden elements, characteristic of Danish design, lend the construction a sense of visual lightness. The seat and backrest consist of six separate cushions upholstered in natural leather in a milk-chocolate brown tone, with even quilting through the centre. The natural texture of the leather pairs beautifully with the warm tone of the teak, creating a classic yet understated combination. The piece embodies the spirit of organic modernism, in which furniture is intended to be not only practical but also visually light and inviting. The sofa exudes calm and balance, perfectly expressing the philosophy of Scandinavian design, in which an object should contribute to the harmony of an interior rather than dominate it.

Georg Thams lived from 1935 to 2016. He was born in Germany and studied at the School of Applied Arts in Flensburg. He initially worked as a cabinetmaker before turning to industrial design. In the 1960s, he moved permanently to Denmark, where he collaborated with such distinguished designers as Børge Mogensen and Poul M. Volther. He specialised in angular designs, primarily sofas and armchairs. All his designs are characterised by strongly defined edges and distinct forms. They were produced by numerous Danish manufacturers, including A/S Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik. Many of his works became icons of Danish modernism and continue to attract interest at auctions; they have also been exhibited in art museums around the world.

The sofa is preserved in its original vintage condition. It shows signs of use, scratches and scuffs on the leather, as well as natural patina. The centre button is missing from one of the seat cushions. Seat height: 38 cm.
