Description

A large oval table from the T69 family, designed by Osvaldo Borsani and Eugenio Gerli for the Italian company Tecno. The original “Tecno Milano” manufacturer’s label is preserved beneath the top. This is a rare, extended version of the model: the top is supported by two characteristic T69 bases, each consisting of four arched legs that splay downwards and upwards like flower petals. The bases are made of cast aluminium lacquered in matt black, with their outer edges finished with a brushed stainless steel profile. The contrast between the black and satin-finished metal emphasises the dynamic line of the legs and makes the table look light despite its impressive dimensions.

The oval top is made of thick smoked glass with a softly ground edge. Its underside features factory-milled recesses into which the pads at the ends of the legs fit. This confirms that the top is original and was designed for this structure from the outset. The tinted glass gives the table an elegant, slightly mysterious character, while also allowing the line of the bases to remain visible. With a length of 230 cm, the table comfortably seats eight to ten people, while its oval shape facilitates conversation. The table would work well in a large dining room, as well as serving as a representative conference table in an office, meeting room or showroom.

Osvaldo Borsani (1911–1985) was one of the most important Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. In 1953, together with his brother Fulgenzio, he founded the company Tecno in Varedo near Milan, which quickly became a symbol of modern, technically advanced Italian design. His best-known designs include the D70 sofa and the P40 armchair. Eugenio Gerli (1923–2013) was a Milanese architect and designer who worked with Tecno for many years.

The table is preserved in original, very good condition. It has only minor signs of use appropriate to its age: a small chip on the edge of the glass top, slight scratches on the glass and minor scratches on the legs.
