Description

A pair of lounge armchairs designed by Eugen Schmidt and manufactured by the German company Soloform in the 1960s. The frame is made of solid cherry wood. The most distinctive feature is the armrests: broad, flat and paddle-shaped, they flow seamlessly into the front legs and backrest frame. The slender, tapering legs and double rail at the back of the backrest give the armchairs a lightness, while the overall construction demonstrates the meticulous craftsmanship for which Soloform furniture was known. This is an example of German modernism that drew on Scandinavian simplicity while retaining its own, more sculptural character.

The loose seat and back cushions are upholstered in the original purple fabric, enhanced with button tufting. The deep seat and slightly reclined backrest provide a comfortable position for relaxing, while the low-slung profile means the armchairs work equally well in a living room or in a bedroom or study seating area. The warm tone of the wood combined with the deep purple creates a distinctive yet cohesive set.

Eugen Schmidt was a German designer and furniture manufacturer whose armchairs, sofas and chairs from the 1950s and 1960s were sold under the Soloform brand. His furniture is distinguished by organic, carefully shaped forms and high-quality craftsmanship in solid wood, most often cherry and teak. Today, his work is sought after as an example of post-war German design.

The piece has undergone a thorough and professional restoration involving the removal of the old finish, staining in a teak wood tone and application of lacquer. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with over 20 years of experience. The cushions retain their original upholstery, which is in very good condition and shows only minor signs of use consistent with its age. Thanks to this work, the armchairs look superb and will serve their new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
