Scandinavian sideboard, designed by Fredrik A. Kayser, Norway, 1960s
Description
Teak sideboard designed by Fredrik A. Kayser and manufactured in Norway in the 1960s. Its form is simple and well balanced, with several details that give it character. On the left-hand side are five drawers whose fronts feature contoured, arched recesses instead of handles. They create a rhythmic, sculptural pattern across the front while also making each drawer easy to open. The top has subtly raised, rounded edges, while the whole piece rests on slender, turned legs finished with brass fittings that lend the sideboard a lightness and elegant accent. Unfortunately, we were unable to establish the manufacturer of this piece of furniture.
The sideboard is highly practical. Behind the two lockable doors is a spacious cupboard divided into two sections, with shelves arranged at two levels. The drawers, with light wooden interiors, can accommodate cutlery, documents or small items, and one of them is lockable. Thanks to its proportions, the sideboard would work well in a living room or dining room, and could also be used as a TV cabinet.
Our collection also includes a second, identical sideboard, restored in the same way. They can be purchased together, offering numerous furnishing possibilities. Placed side by side, they create an impressive built-in arrangement over three metres wide, ideal for a long wall in a living or dining room. They can also be positioned symmetrically on opposite sides of a room or divided between two interiors while maintaining a cohesive style throughout the home. This is a rare opportunity, as identical pairs of vintage furniture appear on the market far less often than individual pieces.
Fredrik A. Kayser (1924–1968) was one of Norway’s most important mid-century furniture designers. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he studied at the National School of Crafts and Artistic Industries in Oslo, and later worked at the Rastad & Relling design studio. In 1956, he established his own studio and designed for numerous Norwegian manufacturers, including Vatne Lenestolfabrikk and Viken Møbelfabrikk. His designs received numerous awards, including for chair model 711 in 1960.
The piece underwent meticulous, professional restoration, including the removal of old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with over 20 years of experience. As a result, the sideboard looks magnificent and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
