A clear vase designed by Sven Palmquist for the Swedish glassworks Orrefors in the 1950s. The vase is made of art glass.

Sven Palmquist was born in 1906 in Lenhovda, Sweden. He is best known for his collaboration with Orrefors glassworks, for which he created the Fuga series of bowls. Palmqvist apprenticed as an engraver at Orrefors. He completed his studies in 1931, specialising in engraving, and subsequently studied in Stockholm at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Palmqvist’s distinguished career at Orrefors lasted more than four decades. The versatile designer also created glass sculptures, which can be seen in churches, at the entrance to SVT in Stockholm, and in offices in Dubai. Palmqvist’s designs are held in the Orrefors seasonal museum, which opened on the site of the former factory. He is remembered as an important creator of 20th-century Scandinavian glass design.

The Swedish glassworks Orrefors takes its name from the forested village in Småland where it was founded. In the 20th century, the name Orrefors became synonymous with outstanding Swedish glass. Orrefors’s reputation spread worldwide in the mid-1920s, first as a result of Orrefors’s presentation at an exhibition in Gothenburg in 1923, and then through its participation in the groundbreaking Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1925, where Orrefors and the artists themselves were awarded the Grand Prix. The company grew and expanded its product lines. Today, the company operates as Orrefors Kosta Boda AB and is the largest glassworks group in Scandinavia. It develops, produces, and distributes a wide range of utility and art glass for private and public use.
