A unique GE 181 A armchair designed by Hans J. Wegner for the Danish furniture maker Getama in the 1950s. The ergonomic frame is made of high-quality oak with a dark, rich tone. The back and seat cushions have been newly upholstered in genuine dark brown leather. Ideal proportions, a simple construction, a high back and wide armrests make this armchair exceptionally comfortable. Elegant, thoughtful design, clean lines and a timeless appearance are the hallmarks of Danish furniture, while Getama embodies the finest craftsmanship. Furniture from this manufacturer has served generations well.

Hans J. Wegner lived from 1914 to 2007. He was a world-renowned Danish designer, known above all for his numerous chair designs. Wegner had a particular talent for combining functionality and aesthetics. Many of his designs are characterised by playful or poetic qualities. Wegner is known as one of the pioneers of Danish modernism and one of the key figures of the golden age of Nordic design. During his career, he received numerous design awards, including the Lunning Prize and the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1951, the Prince Eugen Medal in 1961 and the C. F. Hansen Medal in 1980.

Getama embodies something genuinely Danish. Excellent craftsmanship, quality and the highest level of service made the factory known and respected throughout Denmark. This was largely due to its collaboration with Hans Wegner, who helped Gedsted Tang-og Madrasfabrik achieve an international breakthrough as a furniture company. Following this breakthrough, the company needed a shorter and more international name, so in 1953 Gedsted Tang-og Madrasfabrik became Getama. After more than 120 years, Getama’s ambition remains to create innovative furniture designed by the finest architects.

The armchair is in very good vintage condition. It has minor signs of age on the wood, mainly on one of the legs. The upholstery has been restored. The seat height is 43 cm.
