Industrial metal stool, Germany, 1950s
This factory tripod stool from the 1950s, made in Germany from solid wood and steel, is an example of authentic industrial design from the mid-20th century. The substantial, stable base of three steel legs is finished in matte green paint, whose surface reveals chips and wear exposing the raw metal here and there. The wooden seat, with its pronounced dark brown colour and semi-matte finish, retains visible grain and minor scratches, highlighting the natural passage of time and use. The plaque bears the inscription “T.H. Karlsruhe, Inst. f. Theor. Elektrotechnik u. Messtechnik”, confirming its institutional provenance from a prestigious German scientific institute. The original inventory number has been preserved. Very good technical condition – structurally stable, with historic signs of use typical of its original laboratory function. The form of the stool tells a story of post-war Europe: distinctly functional and free of superfluous decoration, as though every line served a practical purpose. The wooden seat bears traces of far-reaching change – a place where science met everyday life in an industrial laboratory. The metal structure, with visible weld points and areas of worn paint, conveys the spirit of an era in which material durability and simplicity of construction took precedence over adornment and ornament. This piece remembers the hum of measuring machines, student conversations and the concentration of people at their workstations – its quiet presence carries a sense of respect for past generations of engineers. The factory stool can be introduced into an interior as a standalone accent in loft spaces or raw, minimalist living rooms. Paired with a coffee table made of distressed wood or placed beside a lamp with a technical pedigree, it works as a seat, footrest or unconventional display surface for books or plants. It is worth combining with soft textiles to contrast its industrial rawness with the warmth of a domestic interior. It also works well in eclectic collector’s spaces – surrounded by metal, glass and simple 1950s silhouettes, its authenticity becomes even more pronounced.
