Cast-iron cobbler’s organizer, USA, 1910s

Description

Rare and exceptionally decorative, this antique cast-iron cobbler’s organizer with eight compartments was originally intended for storing and sorting nails, tacks, and other small items used by cobblers.
The item has a characteristic eight-lobed floral shape. The individual compartments allowed nails to be conveniently sorted by size.
The upper section rotates on a central spindle relative to the solid, shaped base, allowing easy access to the selected compartment.

This is an example of early American industrial workshop equipment, now also valued as a decorative collectible.
Organizers of this type are known as “Star Nail Cups” and were used mainly in cobbler’s workshops.
Surviving examples are found in several variants, including versions with six and eight compartments.

Similar examples are also described on the market as late 19th-century objects; therefore, without a legible maker’s mark, it is safer to assume the early 20th century rather than assign a specific year.

The item has retained the authentic, raw cast-iron surface characteristic of old tools and workshop equipment.
The signs of use have not been removed, allowing it to retain its original industrial character.

A very interesting item for collectors of American workshop equipment, traditional crafts, shoemaking, and industrial objects.
Note: In the comparative photographs, an identical eight-compartment Star Nail Cup is described as a cobbler’s item made of cast iron; one surviving example bears the inscription “STAR NAIL CUP” on its base.
However, I would not list “Star Nail Cup” in the listing as the definitive designation for your item if this inscription is not present on your base. It is safer to use it as the name of the object type. It is important not to attribute a maker without evidence.
