Description

Original wooden cookie jar, made by Basketville in Putney, Vermont, USA.

The piece has a distinctive cylindrical barrel shape, a wooden lid with a decorative handle and a large folding carrying handle. The body is decorated with brass bands and retains the inscription “COOKIES”.
The bottom bears a slightly blurred original stamp reading “Basketville, Putney, Vermont”, which unequivocally links the piece to the Basketville factory in Vermont.

Dating
Circa 1961–1975, most likely the 1960s.
The dating is based primarily on the identification of the manufacturer’s stamp and the history of the Basketville brand.

Condition:
The item is preserved in its original vintage condition, with visible signs of use and the passage of time. The wood shows natural discolouration, scuffs, minor chips and traces of old surface damage. The brass elements are covered with a natural patina. All such marks are visible in the photographs.

The container is not only a practical everyday object, but also an exceptionally decorative example of American vintage design. It would work perfectly as a decorative accent in a kitchen, dining room or interior decorated in a vintage, rustic or eclectic style.
