Gaston Chaissac lived from 1910 to 1964. He was a French painter. During his stay in Paris, a chance meeting with the painters Otto Freundlich and Jeanne Kosnik-Kloss, who ran an art school, helped him find his path and begin his artistic career. Thanks to them, he exhibited his work in Paris for the first time in 1938. Only two other exhibitions were held during his lifetime: one in 1947, supported by Jean Dubuffet, and another in 1961. It was then that his work finally received recognition from the Parisian art world.

Chaissac’s graphic works are both humorous and powerfully raw. His drawings and paintings are filled with primitive, childlike figures constructed from patchworks of wild, colourful elements, defined and held together by restless black outlines. He expanded this distinctive visual collage technique into three dimensions in sculptures and assemblages made from found objects and materials: tins, brooms, branches and rocks. His process involved continually renewing what had been rejected and the everyday as a transfer of creative energy.

The work is in original vintage condition. This lithograph was also featured on a poster for the Galerie des Ponchettes in France in 1976, inviting visitors to an exhibition of Chaissac’s work.
