Sculpture of a Worker, Terracotta, 19th Century
A unique terracotta figure depicting a porter or labourer carrying a large bundle, created in the tradition of 19th-century genre sculpture.
The figure depicts a standing man wearing a head covering and work clothes, holding a large bundle in front of him. The figure is rendered in a naturalistic style, with clearly defined details of the face, hands, clothing and load.
The object is made of ceramic/terracotta in a characteristic brick-red colour. The sculpture is three-dimensional and features an integral base. Two production holes, formed during the manufacturing and firing process, are visible on the underside.
Comparison with museum and auction objects points to the 19th-century tradition of depicting people engaged in crafts and manual labour. Particularly interesting are the parallels with 19th-century Indian genre figures, including porter figurines from the Krishnanagar centre. However, there is no basis for definitively attributing the object to a specific artist.

The provenance remains undetermined. The form and subject suggest a possible Indian origin, although a European terracotta tradition cannot be ruled out.
This is an interesting piece for collectors of ceramics, genre sculpture, folk art and 19th-century depictions of craftspeople.
