Vintage chair, designed by H. Wegner, manufactured by Getama, Denmark, 1970s
The GE 1936 chair, also known as the Keyhole Chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1944 for the Danish company Getama. The model is distinguished by the characteristic cut-out in the upper part of the backrest, which not only gives it its recognisable appearance but also emphasises the lightness of the entire construction. It is one of the designs that demonstrate how Wegner combined precision craftsmanship with the functionality and simplicity of Scandinavian design.
The frame is made of solid oak, valued for its durability, resistance to everyday use and natural grain. The upholstered seat provides comfort while harmonising with the wooden frame. Carefully shaped armrests and a suitably angled backrest ensure that the chair remains comfortable even during longer periods of sitting. Despite its distinctive form, it retains a visual lightness, making it equally suited to use at a dining table or as a standalone piece of furniture in a living room or study.
The frame underwent professional and meticulous restoration, involving the removal of the old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The seat was reupholstered in beige fabric made from a blend of linen, cotton and viscose, with a texture reminiscent of the materials originally used in the 1960s.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most important representatives of Danish modernism and one of the most highly regarded furniture designers of the 20th century. He trained as a cabinetmaker, which had a profound influence on his later work. He designed more than 500 chair models, many of which are now regarded as icons of global design. His designs are characterised by excellent proportions, high-quality workmanship and a skilful use of the properties of wood.
Getama is a Danish manufacturer founded in 1899. Its name comes from the words Gedsted Tang- og Madrasfabrik. Initially, the company specialised in mattress production, but from the mid-20th century onwards it became one of the most important manufacturers of furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner. To this day, Getama is renowned for its high-quality woodworking, traditional craftsmanship and faithful reproduction of classic Danish designs.
