Vintage Kolding sofa, designed by Erik Wørts for IKEA, Gościcińska Fabryka Mebli, Poland, 1960s

The Kolding sofa was designed by Danish designer Erik Wørts for IKEA in the 1960s. Its distinctive construction is based on a slender, slightly tapered frame made of oak, which was also used for the armrests and legs. Its simple form and exposed construction give the sofa the restrained character typical of Scandinavian modernism.

The sofa has three independent seats and backrests, upholstered in green fabric. The combination of natural wood and colourful upholstery reflects the aesthetic of Danish and Swedish design of the 1960s, when simple construction was often complemented by expressive fabric colours. The sofa has retained very good proportions and can also be positioned in the centre of a room, as its construction has been aesthetically considered from every side.

The piece underwent careful and professional restoration involving the removal of old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a skilled and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. The cushions were made anew to the original dimensions and upholstered in green fabric. As a result, the sofa presents very well and can serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

Erik Wørts (1916–1997) was a Danish designer and cabinetmaker who combined traditional furniture craftsmanship with the possibilities of industrial production. He worked with IKEA from the beginning of the 1960s, designing tables, chairs, sideboards and sofas, among other pieces. His designs were distinguished by simple construction, functionality and an attachment to the quality of the material.

IKEA began working with Wørts at the beginning of the 1960s, and his furniture from this period now ranks among the more interesting examples of the company’s early design.

The Kolding model was produced for IKEA by Gościcińska Fabryka Mebli near Wejherowo, as confirmed by the factory labels found on examples of this model. The history of the furniture IKEA purchased in PRL is described in MIDMOD MAG.
