The IW3 rocking chair, designed by Illum Wikkelsø for the Niels Eilersen workshop, is one of the most distinctive examples of 1950s Danish design. The model was developed in the late 1950s and manufactured in Denmark throughout the following decade. Its form perfectly reflects what Scandinavian design of the period was known for – a combination of functionality, comfort and organic lines inspired by nature.

The presented example is made of solid oak. Its slender construction, gently curved runners and distinctive sculptural armrests lend the piece a sense of lightness despite its solid construction. Wikkelsø designed this model to be as visually appealing as it is comfortable for everyday use. The high backrest and ergonomically shaped structural elements provide a level of comfort that is difficult to find in most contemporary rocking chairs.

The chair has undergone meticulous professional restoration, including the removal of old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. As a result, the chair presents beautifully and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

Stylistically, the IW3 belongs to the tradition of Danish modernism and mid-century modern design. The design is characterised by flowing, biomorphic lines and a restrained form, allowing the chair to look light and timeless even six decades after it was created.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was one of the most important Danish designers of the post-war period. His designs are valued for their harmonious proportions, comfort and subtle organic forms. The manufacturer, Niels Eilersen, began operating in the late 19th century and remains one of the most recognisable Danish furniture brands to this day, renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and collaborations with leading Scandinavian designers.
