Description

Vintage Trio sideboard, designed by Nils Jonsson, manufactured by Hugo Troeds, Sweden, 1960s
A sideboard from the Trio range, designed by Nils Jonsson and produced in the 1960s by the Swedish company Hugo Troeds of Bjärnum. The original manufacturer’s label has been preserved on the inside wall of one of the drawers. The case is finished in teak veneer with a distinctive flame grain, particularly visible on the sliding doors. The most recognisable feature of this model is the central section with five diagonally positioned drawers arranged like a blind. This front gives the sideboard rhythm and lightness, while allowing each drawer to be opened comfortably without handles. The piece is completed by recessed oval handles in the doors, subtly raised edges on the top and slender turned legs, typical of Scandinavian modernism.

The sideboard is highly functional. Two pairs of sliding doors provide access to spacious storage compartments with adjustable shelves, while the drawers, with their light wood interiors, accommodate smaller items. The top drawer is lined with green baize, ideal for cutlery or jewellery. Its proportions make it well suited to a living room or dining room, and it can also be used as a TV stand.

Nils Jonsson was a Swedish designer who worked with Hugo Troeds for many years. His sideboards, including Trio, Arild and Trento, are now among the most recognisable Swedish case pieces from the mid-20th century. The Troeds company was founded in 1934 in Bjärnum, southern Sweden, by Hugo and Svea Troedsson. By the 1950s, it had become one of Sweden’s leading furniture manufacturers, exporting its pieces to many European countries as well as the United States.

The piece has undergone a meticulous and professional restoration involving the removal of old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with over 20 years of experience. As a result, the sideboard is presented in excellent condition and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
