A modernist desk designed by one of the most highly regarded Danish designers of the 20th century, Arne Vodder. He designed this model for the Danish furniture manufacturer GV Møbler (Gasvig Møbler) in the 1960s. The desk is made from solid teak, whose warm tone and elegant grain give the piece a unique character. This is a well-balanced piece of design, where style and functionality go hand in hand. The front consists of a bank of three drawers on one side and a spacious cabinet on the other. All the fronts feature their original minimalist handles. This is a hallmark of the designer, who skilfully combined functionality with subtle elegance. The geometric handles are also made of wood. The tabletop, raised slightly above the line of the cabinets, lends the piece a sense of lightness. Characteristic of Gasvig Møbler furniture, the legs run along the full length of the desk’s sides, making it look appealing from every angle. Arne Vodder was born in Denmark in 1926. Trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, he studied under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he worked as a designer at Hindsgaul, focusing primarily on office interiors. In 1950, Vodder established his own architectural and design studio with architect Anton Borg. Over the years, the studio moved to several locations in Copenhagen before ultimately settling in the suburbs of Holte, north of the city. Vodder and Borg worked together until the 1970s.

Vodder is best known for his furniture designs, which were generally simple forms made from natural materials such as rosewood and teak. His designs were often inspired by natural forms. Vodder collaborated with renowned brands, designing furniture for manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, France & Søn, Nielaus, Sibast and Kircodan. In the 1950s and 1970s, Vodder’s furniture designs were used by President Jimmy Carter in the White House and by President Anwar Sadat in Cairo. They were also incorporated into the United Nations Office in Geneva and featured in numerous hotels, banks and embassies around the world. His work was widely exhibited both individually and in group exhibitions alongside artists such as Verner Panton and Nanna Ditzel.

GV Møbler is a Danish furniture company that gained recognition for producing high-quality mid-century modern furniture. It operated primarily during the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on solid craftsmanship and timeless design. GV Møbler collaborated with renowned Danish designers such as Arne Vodder and G.V. Gasvig. Their designs were characterised by elegance, functionality and a high standard of workmanship.
