Plum Sommerso glass vase, Scandinavia, 1950s

Glass vase produced in Scandinavia in the 1950s. Made of art glass using the Sommerso technique, which means submerged. in Italian. This technique involves repeatedly placing a coloured bubble inside transparent crystal. It is a difficult process, but it creates an impression of three-dimensionality and illumination within the glass mass. The vase is plum-coloured and its form references the designs of Gunnar Nylund, who was a pioneer of the decorative arts of the Mid-Century Modern era and is considered one of the most important 20th-century ceramicists.
