The set of four “Model 31” chairs designed by Kai Kristiansen and manufactured by Schou Andersen is one of the most recognisable designs of 1950s Danish design. The model was created around 1956–1957 and quickly became one of the cornerstones of Kristiansen’s success, even entering early distribution through the IKEA chain, before it became a global giant.

The chairs are constructed from teak, which was the material of choice in Danish modernism—durable, stable, and exceptionally elegant in appearance. The Model 31 is particularly notable for the way its lines flow: the rear legs transition smoothly into the backrest frame, while the characteristic, slightly reclined and sculpted backrest provides natural support for the user’s back. The overall impression is light, yet the construction is highly considered and robust.

The wooden frames have undergone meticulous, professional restoration, including the removal of old finishes, staining, and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. The backrests and seats have been newly upholstered in a high-quality beige-and-white fabric made from recycled cotton and wool, as well as silk. The fabric is distinguished by its interesting and original texture. Thanks to this work, the chairs look beautiful and will serve their new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

The style of these chairs is classic Scandinavian Modern—restrained, functional, and focused on ergonomics. There are no arbitrary details here: every element has both a structural and an aesthetic purpose. As a result, the Model 31 looks good from every angle, which is especially important when arranged around a table, where the furniture is viewed from multiple perspectives.

What distinguishes this model from other chairs of its era is its proportions and comfort. The backrest is clearly sculpted and “works” with the user’s back, while the generous seat depth means that the chairs are not only visually appealing but, above all, comfortable in everyday use—during long dinners or gatherings. The construction is also lightweight, making the chairs easy to move, something appreciated in real-life use rather than merely in staged interiors for photographs.

Another advantage is the timelessness of the design. The Model 31 is not simply “vintage fashion”, but a classic that naturally fits both original mid-century interiors and more contemporary, minimalist spaces. Over time, teak develops even greater depth of colour, further accentuating the character of the set.

Kai Kristiansen was one of the most important Danish designers of the post-war period. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and quickly developed his own design language, based on ergonomics and precise craftsmanship. His designs—including the famous Model 42—are now considered icons of Danish design.

Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik was a respected Danish manufacturer that collaborated with leading designers of the era. The company was known for its high quality of workmanship and attention to detail, both of which are evident in the Model 31—a piece of furniture that, despite being more than half a century old, continues to fulfil its function without compromise.
