Scandinavian secretary desk, Denmark, 1960s
A teak secretary desk from the 1960s, designed in the spirit of Scandinavian modernism, was manufactured in Denmark. Its distinctive feature is its form, with side panels that curve gently from the taller upper section down to the lower chest of drawers. This gives the piece a light, dynamic silhouette, complemented by slender turned legs. The drawer fronts feature oval handles carved directly into the wood, preserving the furniture’s clean lines. Unfortunately, we were unable to identify the designer or manufacturer of this unique piece.

The secretary desk combines several functions in one compact piece of furniture. The lower section contains three spacious drawers. Above them is a pull-out work surface, 46 cm deep, which transforms the piece into a comfortable writing desk or laptop workstation when extended, and disappears back inside when closed, leaving a neat chest of drawers. The upper section contains three small drawers with turned knobs, an open compartment with a shelf, and a flap-front compartment. A lift-up mirror is concealed inside, allowing the secretary desk to also serve as a dressing table. At the very top, there is another open shelf for books or decorative objects. This piece is ideal for a small home office, bedroom, or hallway—anywhere functionality is needed without taking up much space.

The piece has undergone meticulous, professional restoration, involving the removal of the old finish, staining, and application of a lacquer finish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with over 20 years of experience. As a result, the secretary desk looks exceptional and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
