Description
Teak Senator armchair designed by Ole Wanscher, manufactured by Cado, Denmark, 1960s
Designed by Ole Wanscher and manufactured by Cado in Denmark in the 1960s, this armchair is an excellent example of mature Scandinavian modernism. Wanscher’s designs were distinguished by their calm lines, excellent proportions and a deep sensitivity to materials—qualities that continue to define the best of Danish design.
The frame is made from solid teak with a warm tone and pronounced grain, preserved in original very good condition with minimal signs of use in the form of minor scratches. Characteristic features of this model include subtly sculpted armrests and a light, open frame that gives the armchair an elegant yet understated character. The seat and backrest have been reupholstered in beige fabric made from recycled wool.
Stylistically, the model belongs to the mid-century modern tradition—with no unnecessary ornamentation and an emphasis on function, ergonomics and timeless proportions. Wanscher often drew inspiration from classic European furniture, simplifying the form into a modern, visually lightweight construction. As a result, his designs are elegant while also being highly practical.
The armchair works equally well as a place for everyday relaxation and as a fully-fledged element of an interior arrangement. The ergonomically shaped backrest and armrests provide a comfortable, natural seating position, while the open construction means that despite its solid build, the piece does not overwhelm the space. This is the kind of design that ages well visually—calm, functional and easy to pair with both modern and more classic interiors.
Ole Wanscher was one of the most important figures in 20th-century Danish design. Trained under Kaare Klint, he combined traditional craftsmanship with a modern approach to form and ergonomics. His designs were produced by the leading Danish manufacturers of the era, and many remain icons of Scandinavian design to this day.
Cado, founded by Poul Cadovius, was one of the most recognisable Danish furniture manufacturers of the mid-century modern period. The company worked with leading designers, focusing on high-quality construction and modern, functional design.
