Vintage display shelf, United Kingdom, 1950s
Description
Vintage display shelf, United Kingdom, 1950s
A unique, antique display shelf in the Gaybox style from the United Kingdom, dating from the 1950s and 1960s.
Its distinctive design consists of black, contoured shelves and cream, translucent, spirally twisted plastic posts. Systems of this type were designed as modular bookcases for displaying small objects, trinkets, collections, ceramics or decorations. Surviving examples of this system are now offered as antique Gaybox bookcases.
The piece presented here stands out with its extensive, multi-level configuration and height of 62 cm, making it not only a practical piece of furniture but also an exceptionally decorative accent in any interior.
Its minimalist form, the contrast between black and translucent plastic, and its distinctive spiral posts fit perfectly into Mid-Century Modern, Space Age and vintage aesthetics.
