Vintage umbrella stand, France, 1950s
An elegant, original mid-20th-century umbrella stand made of perforated sheet metal, metal rods, and brass elements.
Its form and construction clearly reflect the distinctive design language of Mathieu Matégot, one of the most important French modernist designers of the 20th century.
The stand has a highly distinctive, slender silhouette. Its body is made of finely perforated white sheet metal, set within a geometric frame of metal rods.
The whole is complemented by a heavy, round base with an antique brass finish and a tall, decorative arm topped with a handle wrapped in light-coloured plastic.
Of particular interest is the way the perforated sheet metal is combined with the metal frame — a solution typical of French design of the 1950s, strongly associated with Matégot’s work and his Rigitulle technique.

Condition: Vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use. The surface of the brass-finished base is covered with natural patina, discolouration, and minor signs of wear.
The perforated sheet metal also bears signs of ageing. All these characteristics have been preserved as part of the item’s authentic patina.
