René Genis was a French painter. He was known for his translucent use of colour in depictions of landscapes and still lifes. Genis’s works oscillate between developed forms and areas of flat colour. His compositions create a distinctive harmony between the depicted scene and the formal properties of paint, highlighting its material qualities while accurately capturing the carefully observed details of the real world. Born in 1922 in Hue, French Indochina (Vietnam), Genis and his parents returned to Bordeaux, France, when he was still young. He subsequently studied art at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris under Albert Marquet, where he met other artists and began exhibiting his work. Genis’s paintings are held primarily in French collections, such as the Museum of Aix-en-Provence, but are also held internationally at the Yamagata Museum in Tokyo. The artist died in Paris in 2004.
