Description

Set of 4 oak chairs, designed by E. Knudsen, K. Knudsen & Søn, Denmark, 1952

A set of four modernist chairs designed by E. Knudsen and made by the Danish furniture manufacturer K. Knudsen & Søn. This model was first exhibited at the Købestævnet merchants’ convention in Fredericia, Denmark, in 1952. The chair frames are made of oak in a warm brown tone. Both the seat and backrest are made from hand-woven paper cord. Twisted paper cord woven onto an open wooden frame had been used to create seats for Danish chairs since the 1940s, but in the 1950s and 1960s, paper cord became the defining feature of chairs from the Danish Mid-Century Modern era. This material is extremely durable, as well as natural like the wood around which it is woven.

E. Knudsen was a Danish architect and furniture manufacturer based in Odense. In the 1930s and 1940s, Knudsen’s company was one of the leading and largest furniture manufacturers in Denmark. Kurt Østervig began his career as a furniture designer there.

The chairs have been preserved in their original vintage condition. They show signs related to age and use. There are local variations in tone in the woven sections and signs of gluing at the joints. The seat height is 44 cm.
