This three-seater sofa designed by Grete Jalk and manufactured by France & Søn is an excellent example of mature Danish modernism from the 1960s — a period when form was subordinate to function, but never sacrificed lightness or elegance.

Models from this series were produced in the early 1960s and distinguished by their characteristic construction: a light, open frame with full-length seat and back cushions. This solution was not accidental — the sofa was intended to be comfortable for everyday use while also being easy to transport, thanks to the thoughtfully designed, demountable construction used by France & Søn.

The frame is made of solid teak, a material that became one of the foundations of Danish design. Teak not only ensures durability and stability, but also gives the piece a warm, natural character. Subtly shaped armrests and the visible grain of the wood highlight the craftsmanship, while the open form means that the sofa also looks striking when placed in the centre of a room.

The wooden frame has undergone meticulous, professional restoration, including the removal of old coatings, staining and a lacquer finish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with more than 20 years of experience. The cushions, supported by a spring frame, have been newly upholstered in beige fabric made from recycled wool. The upholstery foam has also been replaced. Thanks to this work, the sofa looks beautiful and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

Stylistically, this is pure mid-century modern in a Scandinavian interpretation — free of unnecessary decoration, with an emphasis on proportion and ergonomics. Jalk’s design is visually restrained, but not anonymous. The distinctive line of the frame and the slightly reclined back create a comfortable, natural seating position that works equally well for a short rest or extended use.

In practical terms, this is a sofa that combines several important qualities: it is comfortable, thanks to its well-balanced proportions and soft cushions; durable, thanks to its solid wood construction; and versatile, as its form does not impose a specific interior style. At the same time, its light, open construction does not overwhelm a room, which is particularly important in smaller spaces.

Grete Jalk was one of the most important figures in post-war Danish design. She trained in Copenhagen, and her designs — inspired in part by the work of Alvar Aalto and Charles Eames — combined a modern approach to form with a strong emphasis on functionality. She designed for leading Danish manufacturers, and her furniture remains highly sought after on the vintage market to this day.

France & Søn was one of the most important Danish manufacturers of the 20th century and played a major role in popularising Scandinavian design around the world.
