Ceramic Bird Feeder, Central Europe, 1900s

Description

Unique antique ceramic bird feeder or bird waterer in the shape of a stylised bird. The item is functional while also featuring an exceptionally decorative folk style.

It is made of thick-walled ceramic covered with a distinctive brown-honey glaze. The construction consists of a tall body with a lid topped by a conical handle. At the front, there is an opening topped with a characteristic moulded element in the shape of a bird’s head and beak, providing access to the interior.
The object retains its original surface with a beautiful patina of age. Natural signs of use, minor glaze chips, discolouration, deposits and marks of long-term use are visible. The underside has been left unglazed.
The form, craftsmanship and character of the glaze indicate Central Europe — probably Germany, the Czech Republic or Austria.

Dated: approximately 1880–1930, most likely the early 20th century, around 1900–1920.

This is an interesting example of early utilitarian ceramics in the folk style, combining functionality with a decorative form
Colour: honey / rusty brown.
Condition: preserved in its original state, with natural signs of age and wear.
