Optical lens on a cast iron stand, 19th century
Description
Optical lens on a cast iron stand, 19th century
A unique antique optical instrument in the form of a large converging lens, set in a brass mount and mounted on a heavy cast iron stand.
Its form and quality of workmanship suggest that it is a European optical instrument from the late 19th or early 20th century, probably intended for experiments and demonstrations in optics and light concentration.
The lens is very thick and strongly convex. The mounting is equipped with a mechanism that allows its position to be adjusted.
The whole is set on a characteristic, heavy, three-legged cast iron base.
The original patina of the metal elements and traces of an earlier black coating have also been preserved.
An object with a highly decorative industrial form, interesting both as a collector’s item and as an interior feature in vintage, industrial or study-style interiors.
The lens is 4 cm thick.
Condition:
Original, with visible signs of age and use. The lens has numerous scratches and a small chip in the central part of the glass. The metal parts show signs of scratches, patina and corrosion. All significant signs are visible in the photographs.
The item has not undergone contemporary restoration or aggressive polishing.
Due to its age, construction and original character, it is an interesting exhibit for collectors of antique scientific and optical instruments.
