Rosewood lounge suite, designed by Knut Sæter for Vatne Møbler, Norway, 1960s
Description
Rosewood lounge suite, designed by Knut Sæter for Vatne Møbler, Norway, 1960s
Elegant lounge suite, comprising a three-seater sofa and an armchair designed by Knut Sæter for the renowned Norwegian manufacturer Vatne Møbler in the 1960s. It features an exceptionally clean, geometric line—the essence of Scandinavian modernism. The construction is based on a light yet sturdy rosewood frame, with distinctly contoured, gently curved armrests. The form is minimalist but not austere—soft edges, balanced proportions and soft upholstered cushions create an elegant and comfortable whole. Green velvet lends the piece a dignified, refined accent that contrasts beautifully with the natural wood. The sofa and armchair have a visually light appearance, so they do not overwhelm the space, even in smaller rooms. Delicate lines and simplicity of form are hallmarks of the Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern style. This suite will not merely complete an interior—it will define it.
Knut Sæter lived from 1922 to 1989. He was a Norwegian interior architect. In 1946, he founded the Vatne Lenestolfabrikk workshop in Vatne, Sunnmøre, which became known as a manufacturer of elegant upholstered furniture. As founder and chief designer, he developed the company, employing his brother and collaborating with renowned designers, including Fredrik Kayser and Sigurd Resell. Together with Fredrik Kayser, Sæter created furniture that earned acclaim at national and international exhibitions. Models such as the three- and four-seater sofas and lounge chairs with characteristic cushions and rolled edges are now prized design icons.
In some catalogues, this suite is attributed to Fredrik Kayser, but according to Vatne, Knut Sæter is the main designer. Although collaborations with Fredrik Kayser are known, Sæter designed his own sofas and armchairs, often more austere, but highly distinctive.
The sofa is preserved in very good condition. The upholstery has been renewed. The seat height is 37 cm. The original maker’s mark is located beneath the seat; both the sofa and armchair are marked.
Armchair: height 72 cm | width 76 cm | depth 71 cm
The colours of the products shown in the photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours.
