Description

Vintage Cosmos coffee table, designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand for Tingströms, Sweden, 1960s

The Cosmos coffee table was designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand for the Swedish manufacturer Tingströms in the 1960s. It is made of high-quality dark teak, which is exceptionally resistant to external factors and owes its durability primarily to its specific composition, rich in oily substances and silicic acid. The table has a simple form reflecting the design principles of the Mid-Century Modern era.

Gunnar Myrstrand and Sven Engström were a duo of Swedish furniture designers who founded an interior design firm in the late 1940s. Both were also teachers of furniture design. They participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Helsingborg H 55 exhibition, where they presented an interior design project for a room. They collaborated with the Swedish Handicraft Association as exhibition architects. Myrstrand represented Sweden at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and worked at the Rörstrand Porcelain Factory in Lidköping. Engström was a member of the Bra Bohag association and in 1952 designed the Ideal furniture series for Skaraborgs Möbelindustri, followed by Skandinett for Svenska möbelfabrikerna in 1961. Together, they designed for Nässjö Stolfabrik, Gemla Möbler, Skaraborgs Möbelindustri, Källemo and Tingströms.

Tingströms was a Swedish furniture manufacturer that gained international recognition in the 1950s and 1960s as one of the pillars of the Swedish Modern style. Tingströms’ greatest acclaim came from its collaboration with the architect duo Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand. Their designs are characterised by purity of form, functionality and the use of fine materials, primarily teak and oak. Tingströms furniture often bears the distinctive Bra Bohag label, which literally means Good Home Furnishings. This was an elite association of Swedish manufacturers and designers whose aim was to promote high-quality design and make it easier for customers to access the best-designed everyday objects. Tingströms’ range also included designs by other renowned creators, such as Folke Ohlsson, with the Frisco series, and Alf Svensson.

The table is in original vintage condition. It shows signs of age and has developed a natural patina.

The colours of the products shown in the photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours. This is due to individual monitor settings and the type of lighting—the photographs were taken under artificial light, which may affect the way shades are perceived. We nevertheless endeavour to ensure that the photographs reflect the actual appearance of the product as accurately as possible.
