There are pieces of furniture that draw attention through their form. This sideboard does so much more subtly. It only truly reveals its beauty when the light begins to play across its surface.

An exceptionally rare modernist sideboard. It was probably produced as a one-off. It strongly evokes Italian pieces from the 1960s and the Mid-Century Modern era. The streamlined, softly sculpted form is finished in an exceptional muted blue with a hint of grey. The colour is not uniform—it comes alive with the wood’s natural grain, creating depth and subtle tonal transitions that make this piece truly one of a kind.

The most distinctive detail is the front. Beneath the finish lies a subtle geometric pattern. The design is surprising, as it appears three-dimensional and changes depending on the angle at which the light falls. Emerging and receding diamonds intersect the natural, richly figured wood grain. Viewed straight on, they are virtually invisible; viewed from an angle, however, they become distinct and beautifully complement the overall design, creating an almost illusionistic effect: invisible one moment, then emerging as a discreet, elegant accent the next. It is a detail that reveals itself gradually rather than all at once.

The sideboard is also functional. Its attractively decorated front consists of a pair of sliding doors. Inside are shelves. Rounded sides emphasize the fluidity of the form, while slender wooden legs lend lightness to the structure. The shape of the sculpted legs is perfectly integrated with the composition. Round handles in patinated metal provide a balanced counterpoint to the furniture’s soft lines and complete its character. The overall effect is light and understated.

This is a sideboard for those who appreciate design built on nuance. The sideboard has undergone partial restoration while retaining its natural patina. It is a piece finished in accordance with the principles of the upcycled vintage movement. Its form is original and dates from the 20th century, while the final finish has been altered through artistic interventions or by combining elements from various original objects. All work was carried out using traditional methods, remains consistent with the aesthetics of the period from which the piece originates, and supports the zero-waste ethos.
